Oriental Studies Tripos, and Preliminary Examination for Part I, 2002

The Faculty of Oriental Studies give notice that, with effect from the examination to be held in 2002, the form of the examinations for the Oriental Studies Tripos and the Preliminary Examination for Part I will be changed as follows:

Preliminary Examination for Part I

Ar. 3. Arabic texts, 2.

This paper will consist of six passages of Arabic for translation into English, of which candidates will be required to answer three. All questions will carry equal marks.

Part I and Part II

Japanese Studies

Japanese oral examination (Part I).

The oral will consist of three sections: (a) a listening comprehension test; (b) reading aloud a short unseen text in Japanese, followed by a short conversation; (c) role play.

Hebrew Studies

H.14 Post-Biblical Jewish texts.

This paper will be divided into three sections:

Section A will contain five passages for translation and comment or for comment only, from prescribed texts in Mishnaic and Medieval Hebrew. All five passages should be attempted. Candidates may, however, substitute a passage in either Jewish Aramaic or Judaeo-Arabic for one of those in Hebrew; Section B will contain a passage of Mishnaic or Medieval Hebrew for unseen translation; Section C will contain a further passage in Hebrew for translation into English and a passage in English for translation into Mishnaic or Medieval Hebrew. Candidates will be required to choose one passage only in this section.

Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies

Is. 8. Middle Eastern and Islamic history, 1.

This paper will consist of three sections, each containing three essay questions. Candidates will be required to answer one question from each section. All questions will carry equal marks.

Is. 12. Arabic language, 4.

This paper will consist of two passages for translation from Arabic to English (35 marks each) with comments on the difficulties involved in the translation (5 marks), and one passage of Arabic with its English translation for critical discussion (20 marks).

Is. 13. Middle Eastern and Islamic culture.

This paper will consist of nine essay questions, of which candidates will be required to answer three. All questions will carry equal marks.

Is. 20. Middle Eastern and Islamic history, 4.

The paper will consist of two sections. Section A will contain three essay questions, of which candidates will be required to attempt one. Section B will contain four passages in Arabic for translation into English, of which candidates will be required to attempt two. All questions will carry equal marks.
