MERTON PROFESSORSHIP OF ENGLISH LITERATURE

The electors intend to proceed to an election to the Merton Professorship of English Literature, which falls vacant on 1 October 2001 on the retirement of Professor John Carey, FBA, FRSL.

An appointment is sought in the period 1500-1700. It is hoped that the new Professor will be able to reinforce and add to existing strengths in the English Faculty; an interest in the drama of the period may be an advantage. A non-stipendiary Fellowship at Merton College is attached to the Professorship.

Applications (eleven copies, or one only from overseas candidates), naming three persons (with postal and e-mail addresses and telephone/fax numbers) who have agreed to act as referees on this occasion, should be received not later than 23 April 2001 by the Registrar, University Offices, Wellington Square, Oxford, OX1 2JD, from whom further particulars may be obtained. Further particulars may also be accessed on the Web (URL: www.admin.ox.ac.uk/fp/).
