M.B., B.Chir. Degrees: Premedical requirements

The Faculty Board of Clinical Medicine have amended Schedule A to the New Regulations for the M.B., B.Chir. Degrees (the premedical requirements) (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 420) as set out below. The purpose of the amendments is to recognize the new Advanced Subsidiary level examination and to change the requirements for completing Part B of the premedical requirements to include passes in Advanced level or Advanced Subsidiary level in three scientific subjects, provided that one of the subjects is Chemistry and that at least one pass in these subjects is at Advanced level. The Schedule has been amended, with effect from 1 October 2002, as follows:

Regulation 1.

By inserting in the first line of the text after 'Advanced Supplementary level' the words 'and Advanced Subsidiary level'.

Regulation 5.

By amending sub-paragraph (a) proviso (2) so as to read:

(2) passes at Advanced level or Advanced Supplementary level or Advanced Subsidiary level may be substituted for the GCSE passes required under (i), (ii), and (iii) above;

By amending sub-paragraph (b) so as to read:

(b) A student shall be deemed to have completed Part B if he or she has obtained Advanced level or Advanced Subsidiary level passes in the following subjects or their approved equivalents (see paragraph (c) below):
(i) Chemistry;
(ii) at least two of the following: Physics, Biology, Mathematics;
provided that
(1) at least one of these subjects must be passed at Advanced level;
(2) Regulation 1(c) of the examination requirements for matriculation is complied with.1

By amending sub-paragraph (c) so as to read:

(c) For the purposes of the premedical requirements approved equivalents shall be as follows:
(i) As equivalent to a pass at G.C.E. Advanced level:
Chemistry: a credit in the Open University course S246.
Biology: a credit in the Open University course SK220 or S203.
Mathematics: a credit in the Open University course MS221 or MS121.
(ii) As equivalent to a pass at G.C.E. Advanced Subsidiary level:
Chemistry: a credit in the Open University course ST240 or S247.
