Centre for Applied Research in Educational Technologies

The Virtual University Steering Group wishes to inform members of the University of progress towards the establishment of a Centre for Applied Research in Educational Technologies (CARET).

CARET is an initiative that has arisen from the work of the Virtual University Steering Group under the Chairmanship of the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Mrs Anne Lonsdale. The group recommended that the University create a Central Development Unit or 'Hothouse' to provide a focus for the investigation, creation, and evaluation of new teaching technologies, based upon sound pedagogic principles. The proposals were approved by the Council and the General Board, through their Planning and Resource Committee, in the Michaelmas Term 1999, and funds have been allocated for an initial period of three years (Reporter, p. 491). Space allocations are under active discussion and it is hoped that work in the 'Hothouse' will get under way in the course of July/August 2000.

So that all students and staff have an opportunity to learn of the proposed workings of CARET the following steps will be taken:

(i) with effect from 29 May 2000, details of the proposals and of future developments will be placed on the web, accessible from within the cam.ac.uk domain, at the URL http://www-caret.cmi.cam.ac.uk/,
(ii) a meeting for staff and students will be held at 5 p.m. on 8 June 2000 in the Babbage Lecture Theatre, at which there will be an opportunity for questions about the CARET proposals to be answered.
