University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for three or five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £17,238 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.

University Lecturers in the Department of Genetics

Three University Lecturers in the Department of Genetics, to take up appointment early in 2001. Applications are encouraged from scientists able to provide dynamic leadership and having a strong research record. They should have active research programmes that will complement existing research activities of the Department in the study of cell function or the regulation of development and cell proliferation at the cellular level. The successful candidates should bring new expertise to the Department. Applicants using yeasts or the mouse as model systems would suitably expand the research expertise of the Department. However, applications will also be welcomed from scientists working on other models such as C. elegans, Xenopus, and Arabidopsis. The appointees will benefit from the recent award to the Department of a JIF grant to strengthen research activities in Cell Biology. They will be expected to play a full role in the teaching and research activities of the Department, including both the training of postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and undergraduate teaching in the Faculty of Biology.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Classics

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in any field of Classical Literature, to take up appointment by 1 January 2001. Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the Faculty's teaching programme in Greek and Latin Literature and Language, and to engage in research in the field of Greek and/or Latin Literature. Preference may be given to a candidate whose research and teaching interests lie in Greek Literature. Applications from scholars in the early stages of their career are particularly encouraged.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Development Economics, to take up appointment from 1 October 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates should have a Ph.D. Degree, or be firmly expected to have one by September 2000.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide some general Economics teaching at the undergraduate level but will also have an opportunity to lecture on his or her particular fields of interest in the Faculty's graduate and undergraduate programmes.

Computer Officer, Grade II or Grade III, in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

Computer Officer, Grade II or Grade III (Unix support), in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, to join a small team providing general computing support for the research community in the Department. Work is varied and includes advising and assisting staff and research students. Applicants should have several years' experience of computing in a scientific or technical environment, preferably using UNIX, but training will be offered to a suitable applicant with experience of Windows NT networking.

The appointment will be for up to three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time, or, when appropriate, to the retiring age. A well-qualified applicant may be appointed on the Computer Officer, Grade II, scale.

The pensionable scales of stipends are:

Computer Officer, Grade II: £23,521 a year, rising by four annual increments to £27,451.
Computer Officer, Grade III: £18,915 a year, rising by six annual increments to £24,479.

Computer Officers in the University Offices (Management Information Services Division)

The Management Information Services Division (MISD) operates a large integrated Oracle database incorporating the central offices' management and administrative information systems. Applications are invited for the following posts. The successful applicants will join a team of developers using leading edge technologies, including Oracle, NT, Windows, Client Server, and WWW to provide business solutions for the University.

Computer Officer, Grade II (Application Support: Finance Division). A new post has been created to offer support for the computing needs of the Pensions Section. Applicants should be educated to degree level and have at least two years' analysis and design experience within a relational database environment, preferably Oracle. Some experience of end-user support in an NT/Microsoft Office environment would be an advantage.

Computer Officer, Grade III or Grade IV (Systems Programmer). Reporting to the MISD Database Manager, applicants should be educated to degree level and have three years' experience of working with VMS and UNIX in a large environment. It is essential the applicant has been involved with at least one major application development using Oracle database and toolsets.

Appointments and reappointments will be for such periods not exceeding five years at time, or, when appropriate, to the retiring age.

The pensionable scales of stipends are:

Computer Officer, Grade II: £23,521 a year, rising by four annual increments to £27,451.

Administrative Officer, Grade I (University Disability Adviser), in the University Offices (Registry Division)

The duties of the post will include providing support and information to students and staff of the University. The post-holder will manage the HEFCE project which includes the Disability Resource Centre, will develop the University's Code of Practice for the support of students with a disability, and will advise the University on the implementation of the Disability Discrimination Act and other legislation. The Disability Adviser represents the interests of Bridget's Hostel on University committees.

Candidates should have an understanding of and empathy with the needs of students and employees with disabilities, knowledge of disability discrimination legislation, good communication and administrative skills, and the ability to work alone as well as part of a team.

Appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time. An Administrative Officer who has reached the maximum of the scale of stipends may be reappointed to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for an Administrative Officer, Grade I, is £22,579 a year, rising by five annual increments to £27,451.

Administrative Officer, Grade II (Finance Training Officer), in the University Offices (Finance Division)

Reporting to the Senior Management Accountant, the main functions of the job are to provide, co-ordinate, and further develop financial training to Departmental staff, at all levels, across the University. The University is implementing the Oracle Financials accounting system, which will make huge improvements to the production of financial information at the University. The role will include training in finance procedures on the new system as well as assisting with the development of best financial practice and procedures across the University.

Applicants should be part-qualified accountants with excellent PC skills and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal. In addition, applicants will preferably have at least three years' experience gained working in a large organization, together with at least one year's experience of training in a financial background. The University will assist with completing professional qualifications, if necessary.

Appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time. An Administrative Officer who has reached the maximum of the scale of stipends may be reappointed to the retiring age. Temporary Lecturer or Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Economics and Politics

Temporary Lecturer or Assistant Lecturer, to take up appointment from 1 October 2000 for three years. Candidates may offer expertise in any area of Economics. Candidates should have a Ph.D. Degree, or be firmly expected to have one by September 2000.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide some general Economics teaching at the undergraduate level but will also have an opportunity to lecture on his or her particular fields of interest in the Faculty's graduate and undergraduate programmes. Appointment will be made for a fixed term of three years at a level equivalent to that of a University Lecturer, at a salary commensurate with age and experience.

Research Assistant in the Computer Laboratory

The Computer Laboratory has a requirement for a Research Assistant to carry on work in online estimation of network traffic for resource management. The appointment is for six months, to start in October 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. Applicants should have a working knowledge of ATM, IP, online estimation techniques, and experience in running a network testbed.

The salary will be in the range £16,286 to £18,185 a year, depending on age and qualifications.

Research Assistant in the Fitzwilliam Museum

The Fitzwilliam Museum is seeking to appoint an art historian or a graduate in an allied discipline with at least three years' museum experience of documentation projects (preferably working with three-dimensional objects), especially at the level of managing terminology and recording procedures, to assist the computing and curatorial staff who are building a database of collections information and images. A thorough working knowledge of SPECTRUM and its application to a wide range of object types is essential. Familiarity with the ADLIB Museum database from ADLIB and a research interest in applied arts or antiquities would be an advantage.

The funds for this post are available (from the Designation Challenge Fund) until 31 March 2001 in the first instance. It is hoped to fill the post as soon as possible. The pensionable salary will be in the range £16,286 to £18,185 a year.
