Historical Tripos, Part II

The following supplementary regulation has been approved for Paper 19 in Part II of the Historical Tripos (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 298), with effect from 1 October 2000:

Paper 19. A subject in modern English history specified by the Faculty Board

This paper will, until further notice, be a paper entitled 'The politics of gender: Britain and Ireland, 1790-1990'. The paper discusses the theory and practice of women's and men's participation in political and governmental processes at both the local and national level. It includes an exploration of major changes in marriage and family law during the period. Great importance is attached to covering the whole of the British Isles and including in the discussion Ireland after 1922. This offers an important opportunity for sustained comparative study. The paper is divided into two sections. Section A consists of questions which take as their starting point one or more prescribed texts. The list of these texts and of recommended secondary reading to accompany them is lodged in the Faculty Office as the Faculty's official book list. Section B will be designed to test knowledge of a series of themes of importance in the general field of the paper. Three questions must be answered; one question, but not more than one question, must be taken from Section A.
