REPORTS

Report of the Council on the construction of a new research facility for the Departments of Experimental Psychology and Anatomy

The COUNCIL beg leave to report to the University as follows:

1. In April 1999 an application was submitted for funding from the Joint Infrastructure Fund (JIF) for construction of a new research facility for the Departments of Experimental Psychology and Anatomy adjacent to the existing accommodation in Huntingdon Road for the University's Biomedical Support Services and the Departments of Physiology and Clinical Veterinary Medicine, and for the purchase of equipment. On 6 December 1999 the Director of Science Programmes confirmed that the Joint Executive Committee of the JIF had approved the application for funding in principle. The application for funding of the building works was in the sum of £19,864,000. Although the level of the final award has not been confirmed, it is anticipated that it will represent a major proportion of the sum applied for. The final award is subject to the submission of further design information.

2. A further £750,000 for items which are not eligible for JIF-funding, such as landscaping and car-parking, will be funded by a grant from the New Buildings Enabling Fund.

3. The proposed research facility will be on two levels, a lower level of 3,800 sq.m. and an upper level of 525 sq.m., and will include research areas, offices, and seminar rooms. The scale of the upper level will be in keeping with the adjacent existing single-storey buildings. A site plan is shown below.

4. The Council recommend:

I. That approval be given for the construction of a new research facility for the Departments of Experimental Psychology and Anatomy, as proposed in this Report.

II. That the Director of Estate Management be authorized to apply for planning consent for the proposed construction.

III. That the Treasurer be authorized in due course to accept tenders for the works within the funds identified.
