REGULATIONS FOR EXAMINATIONS: NOTICE BY THE GENERAL BOARD

The General Board give notice that, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board or other authority concerned, they have approved amendments of the regulations for certain University examinations, as follows:

Philosophy Tripos

The regulations for the Philosophy Tripos (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 373) have been amended as set out below. The purpose of the amendments is to (i) change the arrangements for submission of dissertations and essays so that they may be submitted to the Chairman of Examiners through the candidate's Director of Studies, and (ii) allow the award of a mark of distinction in the class-list for each Part of the Tripos. The regulations have been amended, with immediate effect, as follows:

Regulations 15 and 16.

By renumbering Regulations 15 and 16 as 2 and 3 and renumbering subsequent paragraphs and cross-references accordingly.

Regulation 5 (previously numbered 3).

By replacing in line 5 of sub-paragraph (d) the words 'Faculty Board of Philosophy' by the words 'Chairman of Examiners'.

Regulation 9 (previously numbered 7).

By amending sub-paragraph (a) so as to read:

(a) In place of Paper 12 a candidate may offer a dissertation on a topic of philosophical interest approved by the Chairman of Examiners. A dissertation shall be of not more than 6,000 words and (except with the permission of the Chairman of Examiners) not less than 3,000 words in length, including footnotes and appendices but excluding bibliography.

By replacing in sub-paragraph (b) the words 'Faculty Board' by the words 'Chairman of Examiners'.

Regulation 10 (previously numbered 8).

By replacing the first two sentences so as to read:

A candidate for Part IB who chooses to offer two submitted essays under the provisions of Regulation 5(d), or a candidate for Part II who chooses to offer a dissertation under the provisions of Regulation 9(a) or two submitted essays under the provisions of Regulation 9(b), shall submit the proposed title of the dissertation or the proposed titles of the essays, together with a statement of the papers to be offered in the examination, and in the case of essays a statement of the paper which they are intended to replace, through his or her Director of Studies to the Chairman of Examiners so as to arrive not later than 30 November next preceding the examination. A candidate must obtain the approval of the Chairman of Examiners for the proposed title or titles not later than the last day of Full Michaelmas Term. Dissertations and essays shall be submitted through candidates' Directors of Studies to the Chairman of Examiners, in accordance with detailed arrangements approved by the Board, so as to arrive not later than the last day of the Lent Term next preceding the examination.

Regulation 16 (previously numbered 14).

By amending the final sentence so as to read:

Each class-list may show, by some convenient mark, whether a candidate has passed with special distinction.
