Natural Sciences Tripos, Part III, Chemistry: Notice

Regulation 5 of the regulations for the Natural Sciences Tripos (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 344) states that in order to be a candidate for honours in Part III of the Tripos a student must attain a satisfactory standard, as prescribed by the relevant authority, in Part IB or in another examination approved for this purpose. In their Notice of 12 March 1997 (Reporter, 1996-97, p. 521), the Faculty Boards of Earth Sciences and Geography and of Physics and Chemistry, as the relevant authorities, gave notice that they had defined the requirements for admission to certain subjects in Part III. The Faculty Board of Physics and Chemistry were conscious of the differences in the standards required for the three subjects for which they were responsible, and hoped to standardize the requirements in due course after gaining experience of the effects of the differing regimes. The Faculty Board now give notice that in the light of experience they have agreed to amend the requirements for admission to Chemistry in Part III to bring it into line with the other subjects as set out below:

Chemistry

In order to be a candidate for honours in Chemistry in Part III of the Natural Sciences Tripos a student should:

(1) either (a) have offered both Chemistry A and Chemistry B in Part IB of the Natural Sciences Tripos and have obtained at least a II.2 overall class in Part IB,
  or (b) have offered only one of Chemistry A and Chemistry B in Part IB of the Natural Sciences Tripos and have attained a class II.1 in that examination and undertaken to follow a course of directed reading prior to the start of the Part II (Option B) course;
and
(2)   have obtained honours in Chemistry (Option B) in Part II of the Natural Sciences Tripos.
