Second Annual Report of the General Board on the establishment of personal Professorships and Readerships

The GENERAL BOARD beg leave to report to the University as follows:

1. The General Board's Report on the procedure for the consideration of applications for the establish-ment of personal Professorships and Readerships in 1999 and subsequent years, which was published on 21 October 1998 (Reporter, 1998-99, p. 106) and approved by Graces 7 and 8 of 9 December 1998, outlined the procedure to be followed when an appeal was made. The General Board have received a report from the Appeals Committee for the 1999 exercise. Of the eight appeals received the grounds of the appeal in three cases were upheld. In accordance with paragraph 7.9 of the procedure document (the 'purple booklet') the Board invited the response of their Promotions Committee.

2. The Board now propose the establishment, from 1 October 1999, of two further Professorships and one further Readership as set out in the recommendations below. The establishment of the Professorships is proposed on condition that in each case the office held in abeyance during the tenure of the person's Readership should continue to be held in abeyance during the tenure of the Professorship. The establishment of the Readership is proposed on condition that the University Lectureship currently held by the person to be appointed will be held in abeyance.

3. In order to avoid delay in publishing the Report the General Board have put forward the proposed Professorships and Readership before their titles have been agreed. The Board accordingly seek authorization to announce these titles at a later date.

4. If the proposals contained in this Report are approved, and if the Professorships and the Readership are held on the conditions stated in the Board's proposal, the estimated cost chargeable on funds available for general purposes will be about £24,000 in a full year.

5. The General Board recommend:

I. That, with effect from 1 October 1999, Professorships be established for named persons for one tenure, placed in Schedule B of the Statutes, and assigned to the Department named in each case, as follows:

One in the Department of Chemistry, for Dr S. R. Elliott, T.

One in the Department of Physics, for Dr B. R. Webber, EM.

II. That, with effect from 1 October 1999, a Readership be established in the Department of Pathology for Dr D.W. Dunne.

III. That, if Recommendations I and II are approved, the General Board be authorized to announce the titles of each Professorship and Readership in due course.
