PHILIP WETTON PROFESSORSHIP OF ASTROPHYSICS

The electors intend to proceed to an election to the Philip Wetton Professorship of Astrophysics, with effect from 1 October 2000 or such later date as may be arranged. The Philip Wetton Professorship of Astrophysics is a newly-established Chair, made possible by a generous benefaction from Mr Philip Wetton. The new Chair complements the long-established Savilian Professorship, currently held by J. Silk, and preference will be given to candidates whose research interests include an area of observational astronomy. A non-stipendiary Fellowship at Christ Church is attached to the Professorship.

Applications (ten copies, or one only from overseas candidates), naming three persons who have agreed to act as referees on this occasion, should be received not later than 17 April 2000, by the Registrar, University Offices, Wellington Square, Oxford, OX1 2JD, from whom further particulars may be obtained. Further particulars may also be accessed on the Web (URL:http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/fp/).

TEMPORARY JUNIOR LECTURESHIP IN THE DEPARTMENT OF POLITICS WITH A COLLEGE LECTURESHIP IN POLITICS AT ST JOHN'S COLLEGE

The Department and St John's College propose to appoint to this position for two academical years, beginning on 1 October 2000. The post-holder will replace Professor Desmond King while he holds a BA Research Readership. The individual appointed will be expected to give ten to twelve hours' tutorial teaching a week for St John's College during term. He or she should be able to teach tutorials in the first-year Introduction to Politics course (which covers the politics of the US, UK, France, and theory of politics); and in the final papers Comparative Government and/or Political Sociology, although outstanding candidates with a scholarly interest in political theory or international relations will also be considered. The Lecturer will also be expected to assist in College with the administration of PPE, the pastoral care of students, and with entrance interviewing. Certain limited duties may be required by the Department of Politics. The College will provide a teaching room and certain privileges, and the salary will be on the University's Lecturer scale AO1, starting at £17,238 a year.

Informal inquiries may be directed to Professor Desmond King, St John's College, Oxford, OX1 3JP (e-mail desmond.king@st-johns.oxford.ac.uk).

They should give the names of two referees whom they should ask to write directly to the Academic Administrator at St John's College. Applications (original plus four copies) and references should reach the Academic Administrator by 8 March 2000. Interviews are expected to be held on 16 March.
