Cambridge-MIT Institute: Notice

31 January 2000

The Council wish to inform members of the University of the progress being made with the collaboration between the University of Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

In the Vice-Chancellor's Notice, dated 8 November 1999, concerning the collaboration, it was stated that 'the Council and the [General] Board will publish a Joint Report later in the current academical year, con-taining detailed proposals necessary to establish CMI [Cambridge-MIT Institute] and to effect the academic collaboration' (p. 130).

The Council and the General Board have under active preparation and discussion a Joint Report on the Cambridge-MIT Institute which they hope, subject to satisfactory progress being made in the current discussions with the Office of Science and Technology on the terms of an agreement, to publish later this term. In order to keep members of the University, both staff and students, informed about the details of the proposals, insofar as they are known, the following steps are being taken:

(i) With effect from 14 February 2000, details of the proposals together with commonly asked questions and their answers will be placed on the web, accessible from within the cam.ac.uk domain, at the URL http://www.cmi.cam.ac.uk/.
(ii) From the same date, an internal University USENET news group will be established to facilitate interactive debate about the CMI proposals.
(iii) A meeting for staff and students will be held at 5 p.m on 22 February 2000, in the Babbage Lecture Theatre, at which there will be an opportunity for questions about the CMI proposals to be answered. Tea and coffee will be served before the meeting, at 4.30 p.m.
