University Library: Notice

The regulations for the University Library (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 575) have been amended as set out below. The purpose of these amendments is as follows:

(a) to make provision for the new library for the Physical Sciences, Technology, and Mathematics, which is to have the status of a dependent library and is to be named the Betty and Gordon Moore Library (see the General Board's Report, dated 12 March 1997, on the establishment of a Physical Sciences and Technology Library at Clarkson Road, Reporter, 1996-97, p. 545, and the Council's Report, dated 25 January 1999, on the construction of a Library at Clarkson Road for the Physical Sciences, Technology, and Mathematics, Reporter, 1998-99, p. 301);
(b) to reconstitute the Science Sub-syndicate as a Science Libraries Sub-syndicate, which will be responsible both for the new Betty and Gordon Moore Library and for the existing Scientific Periodicals Library;
(c) to rename the Medicine Sub-syndicate and the Law Sub-syndicate as the Medical Library Sub-syndicate and the Law Library Sub-syndicate, respectively.

The regulations have been amended as follows:

The regulation for the constitution of the University Library

By amending the regulation so as to read:

The University Library and the four dependent libraries (the Betty and Gordon Moore Library, the Scientific Periodicals Library, the Medical Library, and the Squire Law Library) shall jointly constitute an institution under the supervision of the General Board.

The regulations for the Library Syndicate

Regulation 5(b).

By amending the regulation so as to read:

(b) There shall be a Science Libraries Sub-syndicate, a Medical Library Sub-syndicate, and a Law Library Sub-syndicate. Through the agency of these Sub-syndicates the Syndicate shall supervise the management of the four dependent libraries, viz. the Betty and Gordon Moore Library, the Scientific Periodicals Library, the Medical Library, and the Squire Law Library.

Regulation 8.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

8. The Science Libraries Sub-syndicate shall consist of:

(a) four persons appointed by the Library Syndicate;
(b) two persons appointed by the Council of the Cambridge Philosophical Society;
(c) two persons appointed by the Council of the School of the Physical Sciences;
(d) two persons appointed by the Council of the School of Technology;
(e) two persons appointed by the Council of the School of the Biological Sciences;
(f) one person appointed by the Medical Library Sub-syndicate;
(g) not more than three persons co-opted by the Sub-syndicate, provided that it shall not be obligatory to co-opt any person or persons;
(h) one member of the University in statu pupillari, normally a graduate, co-opted by the Sub-syndicate.

Members in classes (a)-(f) shall serve for four years from 1 January following their appointment. Members in classes (g) and (h) shall serve until 31 December of the year in which they are co-opted or of the following year, as the Sub-syndicate shall decide at the time of their co-optation, provided that if a member in class (h) ceases to be in statu pupillari he or she shall thereupon cease to be a member in that class.

Regulations 9 and 10.

By replacing references to the Medicine Sub-syndicate, the Law Sub-syndicate, and the Science Sub-syndicate with references to the Medical Library Sub-syndicate, the Law Library Sub-syndicate, and the Science Libraries Sub-syndicate, respectively.

Regulation 11.

By inserting a new sub-paragraph (d) as follows:

(d) The Librarian shall act as Secretary of each Sub-syndicate.

Regulation 12.

By amending the introductory words so as to read:

In respect of each of the dependent libraries the relevant Sub-syndicate shall have the following duties:

Regulation 1.

By amending the parenthesis specifying the dependent libraries so as to read '(the Betty and Gordon Moore Library, the Scientific Periodicals Library, the Medical Library, and the Squire Law Library)'.

The regulations for the use of the University Library and the notice on borrowing

By amending the footnote to the regulations and notice so as to read:

Excluding the Betty and Gordon Moore Library, the Scientific Periodicals Library, the Medical Library, and the Squire Law Library.

The regulations for the Scientific Periodicals Library, the Medical Library, and the Squire Law Library

By amending the title so as to read:

Betty and Gordon Moore Library, Scientific Periodicals Library, Medical Library, and Squire Law Library

Regulation 1.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

1. Regulations 10, 11, and 15 of the regulations for the use of the University Library, relating to fines, shall apply also to the Betty and Gordon Moore Library, Scientific Periodicals Library, Medical Library, and Squire Law Library.
