REPORTS

Report of the Council on the construction of a building for the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine

The COUNCIL beg leave to report to the University as follows:

1. The accommodation for the teaching of large animal handling in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine is currently located on the Merton Hall Farm site on Madingley Road. This is to be demolished in the spring, in order to make way for the new access to the West Cambridge Site as shown in the Master Plan proposals published in Reporter, 1996-97, p. 100. In July 1999 the General Board authorized preparation of detailed plans and estimates for a new Stabling Block on the Site of the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine.

2. A scheme has been prepared by the Estate Management and Building Service for the replacement of the existing facility by a new building to contain a stabling block and some ancillary accommodation on a site adjacent to the Innes Building and existing equine facilities in the Veterinary School complex, as shown on the accompanying drawing.

3. The proposals have been recommended for approval by the Finance Committee. The estimated cost of the work is £180,000 including VAT and fees. This will be met from the West Cambridge Infrastructure funds.

4. In view of the urgency to complete this building prior to the demolition of Merton Hall Farm, a planning application was submitted in late August, under the General Board's delegated arrangements.

5. Drawings of the proposed scheme are displayed for the information of the University in the Schools Arcade.

6. The Council recommend:

I. That approval be given for the construction of the Stabling Block for the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine.

II. That the Treasurer should be authorized to accept a tender for its construction within the available funding.
