The Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2000, the form of the examinations for certain papers of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos will be changed, as follows:
In this paper four questions of a general nature will be set, rather than questions relating specifically to each linguistics paper available in the Modern and Medieval Languages, Part II, Schedule. Each question may be answered with reference to any sub-discipline of linguistics.
As in previous years this paper will not be divided into sections. It will contain a variety of questions on aspects of Goethe's life and works. Question 1 will offer a choice of topics of a more general nature relating to Goethe's literary and intellectual character. Candidates will be required to answer Question 1 and two other questions. Candidates should note Dr N. Boyle's seminar in the Lent Term. In this bi-weekly seminar issues similar to those which are likely to be covered in Question 1 of the examination will be addressed.
A preparatory meeting at which topics for this bi-weekly seminar will be assigned, will be held at 10.30 a.m. on Thursday, 2 December, in the Parlour, Magdalene College.
Candidates will be expected to answer one question with a language component. They will also be expected to answer two questions on Catalan culture, which will be divided into four sections as follows: 1900-1939, 1940-1975, 1975-1999, and a general comparative section on Catalan cultural history in the twentieth century.
