Announcement of lectures and seminars

The following lectures and seminars will be open to members of the University and others who are interested:

E. C. Quiggin Memorial Lecture. The Head of the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic, and Dr Brendan Bradshaw give notice of the sixth annual lecture in memory of Edmund Crosby Quiggin, Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Monro Lecturer in Celtic, University Lecturer in German (†1920). The theme of these annual lectures is 'The Sources of Gaelic History'. The lecturer will be Dr Tadhg O'Keeffe, who will speak about The Gaelic peoples and their archaeological identities, AD 1000-1600, at 5 p.m. on Thursday, 25 November, in the Umney Lecture Theatre, Robinson College. The lecture will be followed by a reception.

Cambridge Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Ageing. A symposium, entitled Designing for an ageing population, will be held from 4.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday, 14 December, in the Winstanley Lecture Theatre, Trinity College, as follows:

The physical and mental capabilities of the ageing population, by Felicia A. Huppert, of the Department of Psychiatry.

The inclusive design project, by John Clarkson, of the Engineering Design Centre, Cambridge.

Criminology. A seminar, entitled Hobson's choice: coerced treatment for dependent drug users, will be given by Professor Mike Hough, of South Bank University, London, at 5.30 p.m. on Thursday, 2 December, in Room B.16, Faculty of Law, West Road.

Fitzwilliam Museum. Lunch-time Gallery Talks, under the general title Art in context, will be given at 1.15 p.m. on Wednesdays, from 13 October to 1 December.

1 December The first Christmas, by Dr Paul Binski, of the Department of History of Art.

Oriental Studies. The first Sir Harold Bailey Memorial Lecture, entitled Hunting the Hapax: Sir Harold Walter Bailey (1899-1996), will be given by Professor R. E. Emmerick, FBA, of the University of Hamburg, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, 16 December, in Lecture Room 2, Mill Lane Lecture Rooms.

Japanese Studies. Ms Lucia Dolce, of the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, will give a talk, entitled Miraiki: prophecy, history, and religious legitimation in medieval Buddhism, at 2.15 p.m. on Monday, 29 November, in the Sorimachi Room, Faculty of Oriental Studies, Sidgwick Avenue.
