Philosophical Society

Dr S. Pellegrino, of the Department of Engineering, will deliver a lecture, entitled Umbrellas for space: a new generation of deployable antennas, at 8.30 p.m. on Monday, 8 November, in the Cockcroft Lecture Theatre, New Museums Site. All who are interested are invited. There will be a short business meeting before the lecture.

At a meeting held on 25 October, Dr A. J. Munro, President, was in the Chair. Professor Stephen O'Rahilly, of the Department of Medicine, delivered a lecture, entitled Human obesity: simply gluttony and sloth? A vote of thanks to the speaker was moved by Dr Susan Judd.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Annual General Meeting of the Society was held on Monday, 25 October 1999 in the Arts School, Bene't Street at 4.30 p.m.

Dr A. J. Munro, President, was in the Chair.

1. The Treasurer presented the audited accounts for the period January to December 1998.
2. The following Officers and Members of the Council were elected for the year 2000:

President: Professor A. Howie.

Vice-Presidents: Professor M. F. Ashby, Professor J. S. Parker, Dr A. J. Munro.

Treasurer: Dr A. V. Edwards.

Secretaries: Dr A. M. Campbell (Physical), Dr C. L.-H. Huang (Biological), Dr J. M. E. Hyland (Mathematical).

Ordinary Members of Council who continue: Sir Sam Edwards, Dr D. Husain, Dr R. G. Boutilier, Dr D. B. Norman.

New Ordinary Members of Council: Dr B. T. Grenfell, Professor D. G. Crighton, Professor M. Ashburner, Dr M. A. Tester, Professor T. M. Cox, Professor J. D. Mollon, Dr D. E. Bowyer, Dr C. Y. Barlow.

3. Fifteen Fellows were elected and one was re-elected. It was reported that since the last Annual General Meeting eight Fellows had died and 207 had resigned.
4. Messrs Peters Elworthy and Moore were appointed to act as Auditors for the year 1999.

ONE-DAY MEETING

A one-day meeting on Human genome project will be held in the Pippard Lecture Theatre, Cavendish Laboratory on Monday, 6 December, starting at 10 a.m. This will be an interdisciplinary meeting open to all members of the University. The speakers are Dr David Bentley, Dr Peter N. Goodfellow, FRS, Professor Ryk Ward, Professor Bruce Ponder, Dr Gillian Bates, Dr Jonathan Flint, Professor Martin Bobrow, and Dr Yvonne Cripps.

Applications should be made in writing to Miss J. M. W. Thomas, Executive Secretary, Cambridge Philosophical Society, Bene't Street, Cambridge, CB2 3PY (or e-mail camphilossoc@ula.cam.ac.uk), for the full programme. The first 120 Fellows of the Society to apply will be offered free lunch.
