Department of Engineering

RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP

Applications are invited for the position of Research Student, to work on transonic helicopter noise. The project is funded by EPSRC and will involve collaboration with GKN Westland Ltd and Thomson-Marconi Sonar Ltd. The project will exploit computational fluid dynamics and novel extensions of the Lighthill acoustic analogy to understand and predict the sound generated by high-speed helicopter rotors. The Research Student should have, or expect to obtain, a good degree in Engineering or Mathematics with a background in fluid mechanics, and be eligible for an EPSRC Studentship.

The Studentship will be for three years, starting on 1 January 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. University and College Fees will be paid, together with a maintenance award at EPSRC levels, currently £6,620 a year.

Further information may be obtained from Professor A. P. Dowling, Department of Engineering, Trumpington Street, Cambridge, CB2 1PZ, (tel. +44 (0)1223 332739, fax +44 (0)1223 330282, e-mail apd1@eng.cam.ac.uk), to whom a letter of application and a curriculum vitae (including the names and addresses of two referees) should be sent to reach her not later than 26 November 1999.
