VACANCIES AND STUDENTSHIPS

Department of Engineering

PH.D. RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP IN BRIDGE ENGINEERING

Applications are invited for a Ph.D. Research Student in bridge engineering. The Department is currently involved with a research programme, funded by the Highways Agency and the Babtie Group, aimed at developing improved methods for assessing the strength and reliability of highway bridges and, in particular, reducing the uncertainties involved with bridge management procedures. The particular study area will be strength estimation from observed defects. This studentship covers full University and College fees and provides a maintenance grant, which is tax free, of approximately £10,000 a year, depending on age, for the three-year duration of the studentship. It is envisaged that the successful candidate, who should be either a UK resident or EU National, will have a good Honours or Masters degree in civil or structural engineering.

Applications, with curriculum vitae and the names and addresses of two referees, should be sent by Thursday, 21 October 1999 to Mrs R. Baxter, Secretary of the Structures Research Group, Department of Engineering, Trumpington Street, Cambridge, CB2 1PZ. (fax 01223 332662, e-mail rcb@eng.cam.ac.uk), from whom further information may be obtained. Information about bridge research at the Department is given at www-civ.eng.cam.ac.uk/brg/.
