Leverhulme Trust

GRANTS TO INSTITUTIONS FOR RESEARCH

The Leverhulme Trust invites applications from individuals for research grants to be administered by institutions. Staff employed at universities and other institutions of higher and further education in the UK, registered charities in the UK, and similar institutions in developing countries are eligible to apply. Awards cover the salary costs of a researcher or researchers of post-doctoral level to work on an original, specific and discrete research project, plus limited support costs. Overheads, equipment and other capital items are not eligible costs.

Grants are normally awarded for a period of six months full-time to three years. All fields are eligible except social policy and welfare, medicine, school education, archival or cataloguing work unless it directly involves or leads to important and original research, and archaeological digs. Interdisciplinary projects are especially encouraged. The principal purpose of applications must be to pursue a research project rather than to fund a particular individual or post. Replacement teaching costs are only rarely met. Students may not be employed on research grants to institutions.

AWARDS TO INDIVIDUALS

Research Fellowships and Grants

The Leverhulme Trust invites applications from experienced researchers, particularly those who are or have been prevented by routine duties from completing a programme of original research. Approximately 120 awards are offered annually. Grants provide research expenses over and above normal living costs; Fellowships provide a contribution towards replacement teaching costs (normally on an hourly-paid ad hoc basis) or loss of earnings plus research expenses, if required.

Emeritus Fellowships

The Leverhulme Trust invites applications from recently retired scholars to complete and prepare for publication the results of research already begun. Approximately 30 Fellowships are offered annually.

Study Abroad Studentships

The Leverhulme Trust invites applications from holders of UK first degrees or the equivalent for Studentships to support an extended period of advanced study or research at a centre of learning overseas (except the USA). Approximately 20 Studentships are offered annually.

Special Research Fellowships

The Leverhulme Trust invites applications from those with a proven record of research who do not hold or have not held a full-time established academic post in a UK university or comparable institution. Fellows will be expected to undertake a significant piece of publishable research during tenure of the award. The scheme is based on a 'pound for pound' system: the Trust pays half of the Fellow's salary costs and the host institution pays the other half. Up to 20 Fellowships are offered annually.

Further information about the Leverhulme Trust and the above awards may be found on the Trust's web-page (http://www.leverhulme.org.uk/). A copy of the Guide for applicants may be seen at the University Registry, The Old Schools, during office hours.
