Examination in Theology for the M.Phil. Degree (one-year course)

The regulations for the examination in Theology for the M.Phil. Degree (one-year course) (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 487) have been amended, with effect from 1 October 1999, as follows:

Regulation 1(b).

By amending the title of Paper 6 so as to read:

Paper 6.  Church and society in modern Britain.

The Degree Committee for the Faculty of Divinity give notice that for the examination to be held in 2000 the subjects for exercises under Regulation 1(d) will be as follows:

(a) Subjects to be examined by means of a three-hour written paper

Subject A Latin
Subject B German
Subject C Elementary Hebrew
Subject D Hebrew
Subject E Sanskrit
Subject F Qur'anic Arabic
Subject G Syriac
Subject H Aramaic
Subject I Greek epigraphy
Subject J Latin palaeography
Subject K Archaeology

(b) Subjects to be examined by means of a essay or other written submission of not more than 4,000 words in length

Subject L Textual criticism of the New Testament
Subject M Bibliographical survey
Subject N Analytical bibliography
Subject O Methodological skills for the scientific study of religion
Subject P Applications of the psychological study of religion

The following texts are prescribed for Paper 6 for the examination in 2000:

A. Mearns, The Bitter Cry of Outcast London: An Inquiry into the Condition of the Abject Poor (London, Frank Cass, 1970); T. S. Eliot, The Idea of a Christian Society, ed. D. L. Oden, Care of Souls in the Classic Tradition (Philadelphia, Fortress, 1984).
