Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos, Part II

The New Regulations for the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 346) have been amended as set out below. The purpose of these amendments is (a) to remove the present general restrictions which limit candidates' choice of subjects for compulsory dissertations, (b) to give the Faculty Board power to impose such restrictions in the case of particular subjects, and (c) to simplify the procedure that candidates are required to follow in obtaining approval for the proposed titles of their dissertations. These amendments take immediate effect, and thus apply to candidates who are preparing for the examination in 2001 (or, in the case of one-year candidates or Affiliated Students, for the examination in 2000). The regulations have been amended as follows:

Regulation 17.

By adding at the end of the regulation the words ', or on the subject areas in which a candidate may offer a dissertation'.

Regulation 26.

By amending sub-paragraphs (a)-(c) so as to read:

(a) Every dissertation shall be on a subject that falls within the field of modern and medieval languages, including linguistics and comparative studies. An optional dissertation shall be on a subject that falls within the scope of a paper from Schedule II.
(b) Compulsory dissertations
Every candidate who is required to offer a compulsory dissertation shall give notice to the Secretary of the Faculty Board, in accordance with the following arrangements, of the general area within which the subject of the proposed dissertation will fall:
(i) A student who is a candidate under Regulation 24(a) shall give notice by a date announced by the Faculty Board, which shall be not later than the last day of the Easter Term in the year next but one preceding the examination. If, after giving such notice, a candidate subsequently wishes to revise his or her choice of subject and to offer a dissertation on a subject that falls within a general area different from that notified, he or she must seek the permission of the Faculty Board not later than the division of the Easter Term in the year next preceding the examination.
(ii) A student who is a candidate under Regulation 24(d) shall give notice by a date announced by the Faculty Board, which shall be not later than the last day of the Easter Term in the year next preceding the examination.
After giving notice as required above, a candidate shall submit the proposed title of the dissertation to the Secretary of the Faculty Board, in accordance with any instructions issued by the Board and according to the timetable set out in Schedule E.
(c) Optional dissertations
Every candidate who wishes to offer an optional dissertation shall submit the proposed title to the Secretary of the Faculty Board, in accordance with any instructions issued by the Board and according to the timetable set out in Schedule E.
