University offices: Vacancy

The University follows an equal opportunities policy and has a policy on arrangements for part-time work.

Applications are invited for the following University office:

Computer Officer, Grade II, in the Department of Earth Sciences

Computer Officer, Grade II, in the BP Institute of the Department of Earth Sciences to take up appointment as soon as possible in an interdisciplinary research group which will apply theoretical and numerical techniques to obtain a better understanding of fluid mechanical problems especially those concerned with multiphase flow.

The BP Institute is wholly funded by a generous benefaction from British Petroleum. Five University Departments are involved in the Institute, with the Department of Earth Sciences being responsible for its management. A new building is being erected which will house up to thirty research staff and which is scheduled for completion by the summer of 2000.

In the first instance the Computer Officer will be involved in the planning of the computing infrastructure of this new building, and will be concerned with both the software and hardware. The Officer will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of a mainly Unix based network of workstations and personal computers. We seek someone with a good knowledge of UNIX, FORTRAN, and C. A familiarity with networking and scientific computing, including parallel programming and 3D visualization, would be advantageous. The Computer Officer will have close working connections with the research staff and with BP, and a strong emphasis will be placed on communication skills as well as technical ability. The Officer will liaise with other Computer Officers in the five collaborating Departments, as well as with the central Computing Service of the University. The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time or, when appropriate, to the retiring age.

The pensionable stipend for a Computer Officer, Grade II, is £22,726 a year, rising by four annual increments to £26,523.

Further particulars are available from the Administrator, Department of Earth Sciences, Downing Street, Cambridge, CB2 3EQ (tel. 01223 333421, e-mail mij10@esc.cam.ac.uk), to whom applications (ten copies) should be sent so as to arrive no later than 31 March 1999. No application forms are issued. Applications should include a curriculum vitae and the names of two or three referees. Candidates should ask their referees to send their reports direct to the Administrator so as to reach her by 31 March 1999.
