Scientific Periodicals Library: Notice

The Scientific Periodicals Library (SPL) is an integral part of the University Library and the largest scientific library in the University. The library was founded as the library of the Cambridge Philosophical Society in the early nineteenth century. It has occupied its present building since 1935. It is open for reference purposes to all members of the University. New readers should register with the library on their first visit.

The SPL receives 3,000 current periodical titles covering all aspects of science and technology and has a stock of more than 190,000 volumes. Although designated a periodicals library, the SPL provides a full range of information services and support for both researchers and students including assistance with online reference sources, databases, and inter-library loans.

The SPL is located on the first and second floors of the Arts School Building, Bene't Street, just off King's Parade. After 5.15 p.m. the library should be approached through the Free School Lane or Pembroke Street gates to the New Museums Site. Opening hours during Full Term are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Outside Full Term the SPL is open at times determined by the Science Sub-syndicate and posted on the library door.

The Cambridge Philosophical Society's offices are located within the library. Details of membership and other facilities are published separately.
