MEMORIAL SERVICE

A Memorial Service for Professor Sir Harry Hinsley, O.B.E., M.A., F.B.A., Fellow and formerly Master of St John's College, formerly Vice-Chancellor, Emeritus Professor of the History of International Relations, will be held in the College Chapel on Saturday, 2 May 1998, at 12 noon. Application forms for tickets may be obtained from the Chapel Clerk, St John's College, Cambridge, CB2 1TP.

HARPER-WOOD STUDENTSHIP FOR ENGLISH POETRY AND LITERATURE

St John's College invites applications for the Harper-Wood Studentship for English Poetry and Literature. The purpose of the Studentship is to encourage creative writing by making it possible for the holder to travel and study. During the period of tenure, the Student will be expected to produce original literary work while engaging in a course of study or research (not necessarily attached to a university or other institution). All or part of the period of tenure must be spent in a foreign country of the Student's choice.

The Studentship is tenable for one year and is not renewable. It is a condition of election that at the time of the election the candidate be a graduate of any university of Great Britain, Ireland, the Commonwealth, or the United States of America, and be not over thirty years of age. The Student will normally be expected to enter upon the Studentship on 1 October 1998.

The emoluments of the Studentship will be determined by the College Council in light of the Student's qualifications and financial circumstances (including emoluments from other sources), up to a maximum of £5,295. Financial assistance may also be given to enable the Student to spend all or part of the period of study abroad.

Letters of application should be sent to the Master, St John's College, Cambridge, CB2 1TP, to reach him not later than 31 May 1998 and should be accompanied by the candidate's curriculum vitae or résumé, a plan of the proposed study or research and of the proposed travel, and the names and addresses of not more than two referees. Short-listed candidates may be invited to submit examples of their work, up to a limit of 5,000 words. Details of any other research plans or applications which might relate to the tenure of the Harper-Wood Studentship should also be supplied.
