Magdalene College

KIPLING LECTURE

Professor Emeritus T. H. Pinney, of Pomona College, California, will give a lecture in Magdalene College on 18 March 1998 on Kipling's unpublished - and perhaps unwritten works - entitled The Kipling that nobody will ever read.

The lecture will be from 5.30 to 6.30 p.m. in the Benson Hall, courtesy of the Master and Fellows. Admission to the lecture is free and a ticket of admission may be obtained on application to the Praelector's Secretary, Magdalene College, Cambridge, CB3 0AG, tel. 332100, fax 462589, e-mail jdl@eng.cam.ac.uk. Tea will be available beforehand, if ordered with a request for a ticket, at a price of £2.50 per head, payable in advance or on arrival.

Professor and Mrs Pinney will be honoured at a subscription dinner to take place in the College after the lecture. The cost of the dinner, with wines, is an inclusive price of £25 per head, payable in advance by 1 March 1998, and again may be ordered with the request for tickets, subject to demand and availability. Carriages 10 p.m. Accommodation overnight and breakfast are available in student rooms in College at an inclusive price of £29 per head, again payable only in advance by 1 March 1998.

After the lecture, the College will display a number of items connected with Kipling, Honorary Fellow of the College, 1932-1936, and Honorary Graduand, 1908. These include his gift of the poem 'To the Companions' celebrating the Pepys connection, his portrait by Strang commissioned by Max Aitken, Lord Beaverbrook, and a volume of twenty-two poems in draft manuscript given by his widow, Carrie Kipling, together with copies of letters of Kipling written in connection with his Honorary Fellowship.

Professor Pinney, a Vice-President of the Kipling Society, is well known for his current activities in editing the Kipling letters: volumes 1-3 have already been published, 4 and 5 are in preparation. He is also responsible for the definitive edition of Macaulay's letters and is author of A history of wine in America.
