University offices: Vacancies

Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Organic Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry to take up appointment on 1 October 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. The post is open to applicants specializing in any branch of organic or bioorganic chemistry. The appointment will be sponsored by Vanguard Medica plc, and the appointee is expected to take up a Fellowship at Pembroke College. The Fellow will be expected to provide direction of studies and teaching for Pembroke College, under the normal University conditions (i.e. up to twelve hours per week). The appointment will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age and experience of the person appointed, and will be for three years, with the possibility, for a University Lecturer, of reappointment to the retiring age or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, of reappointment for two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

 The pensionable scales of stipends are:

University Lecturer: £19,371 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £29,875.
There is no grade of Senior Lecturer.
University Assistant Lecturer: £16,045 a year, rising by six annual increments to £21,016.

University Lecturers in the School of Education

Two University Lecturers in the School of Education to take up appointment on 1 September 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Mathematics Education

This appointment will enhance the School's existing strengths in mathematics education. Candidates should be able to demonstrate successful experience both in mathematics teaching and in educational research. The postholder will take a major responsibility for preparing secondary mathematics teachers within the Faculty's P.G.C.E. partnership with schools and will contribute to continuing professional development and higher degree work in the field. Primary Education

This appointment will enhance the School's existing strengths in the broad area of primary education. Candidates should be able to demonstrate successful experience in both teacher development and school improvement, and the ability to apply this experience in innovative research and evaluation projects. We are seeking to appoint someone who can give practical support and theoretical guidance to school leaders and managers in their efforts to improve their schools, to promote the professional development of their staff, and especially to foster effective teaching and learning in classrooms. The postholder will take a major responsibility for continuing professional development and higher degree work in the field.  Both appointments will be for three years with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

Lector in the Department of German

Lector in the Department of German to take up appointment on 1 October 1998. The successful candidate must be a native speaker of German, with a minimum qualification of the Staatsexamen or its equivalent, and will be responsible for German language classes for all parts of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos, including classes with an audio-visual element. Familiarity with computer-assisted language learning and/or a qualification in teaching German as a foreign language may be an advantage. The appointment will be for one or two years, with the possibility of reappointment for one year at a time. The statutory limit of tenure for a Lector is five years.

 The non-pensionable scale of stipends for a Lector is £12,572 a year, rising by three annual increments to £15,159.
