Assistant Director of Research in the Institute of Astronomy

Assistant Director of Research in the Institute of Astronomy in any area of theoretical or observational astronomy or astrophysics to take up appointment on 1 October 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Institute's current activities include work in cosmology and large-scale structure of the Universe, the formation, structure, and evolution of galaxies, quasars, high-energy astrophysics, stellar dynamics, N-body simulations, star formation and evolution, accretion discs, helio- and asteroseismology, gravitational lensing, numerical hydrodynamics, measurement of stellar radial velocities, and instrumentation for large optical and IR telescopes. The successful applicant would be expected to contribute to these or other research programmes and interact with the other members of the Institute as well as astronomers in other related departments in Cambridge. The appointee would also be expected to contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching needs of the Institute. The appointment will be for five years in the first instance with the possibility of reappointment for further periods of five years or to the retiring age.

 The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Director of Research is £19,371 per year rising by ten annual increments to £27,985.

Senior Advisory Officer (Energy Co-ordinator) in the University Offices (Estate Management and Building Service)

Senior Advisory Officer (Energy Co-ordinator) to take up appointment as soon as possible. Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Energy Co-ordinator will be responsible for the reduction and efficient use of energy and water consumed throughout the University estate. The duties will include analysing abnormal consumption, advising on methods of reduction, and monitoring the performance of measures introduced. An essential feature will be to ensure that utilities are purchased as cost-effectively as possible, and this will require tender preparation and analysis as well as sample checking of accounts rendered. Each applicant must be computer literate, qualified to degree level in a relevant engineering discipline, and a corporate member of an appropriate professional institution. The successful candidate is likely to have at least ten years' post-qualification experience, and must be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the energy supply industry and a thorough understanding of energy efficiency principles relating to engineering services and building design. The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

 The pensionable scale of stipends for a Senior Advisory Officer is £26,508 a year rising by three annual increments to £29,875.
