University offices: Vacancies

Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences in political theory to take up appointment on 1 October 1998 or a date to be arranged. The successful candidate should have a competence in the history of political ideas and an active interest in the analysis of contemporary politics.

 The appointment will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age and experience of the person appointed, and will be for three years, with the possibility, for a University Lecturer, of reappointment to the retiring age or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, of reappointment for two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

 The pensionable scales of stipends are:

University Lecturer: £19,371 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £29,875.
There is no grade of Senior Lecturer.
University Assistant Lecturer: £16,045 a year, rising by six annual increments to £21,016.

Head of the University Accommodation Service and Secretary of the Accommodation Syndicate

Head of the University Accommodation Service and Secretary of the Accommodation Syndicate to take up appointment as soon as possible. Applications are invited from people interested in satisfying the housing needs of students and University employees, and capable of managing the University Accommodation Office. Applicants, who should be graduates or hold equivalent qualifications, must have several years' relevant administrative experience at managerial level. Familiarity with the University structure and with Cambridge geography would be valuable. The duties of the Secretary will involve responsibility under the Syndicate for the work of the Accommodation Office in enlisting and recommending suitable housing for all the categories laid down by the Syndicate as entitled to assistance.

 The Accommodation Office works alongside the Society for Visiting Scholars and the Newcomers Group who provide a valuable service as volunteers. It will be important for the Head of the Accommodation Service to maintain the existing excellent working relations.

 The appointment will be for three years in the first instance, unless the Council waive this requirement, in which case the appointment will be for an initial period not exceeding five years. Reappointments will be for periods not exceeding five years at a time.

 The salary is on a scale of £17,606 to £22,785 a year, according to age and experience.
