How to get to the Old Schools

Directions for visitors

The main University Offices site is located at the Old Schools on Trinity Lane. The main entrance to the site is from Trinity Lane. All visitors must report to reception upon arrival. Reception is situated on the right hand side of the first courtyard as you enter.

Arriving by train

There are fast trains from London King's Cross Station to Cambridge every half hour, taking about 50 minutes. There are also cross-country connections from the Midlands via Peterborough and from Stansted airport. Full timetable details are available from Network Rail.

Taxis and buses to the city centre are available from the station. The station is a 20 minute walk from the city centre.

Arriving by car

There are five Park & Ride sites around Cambridge: Cowley Road (north), Newmarket Road (east), Babraham Road (south east) Trumpington (south west) and Madingley Road (west). Buses to the city centre run every 12 minutes, starting at around 7am and finishing at around 8pm.

If you are driving into Cambridge, the nearest car park to the Old Schools is the Lion Yard car park on Pembroke Street. Metered parking is also available along Queen's Road (the Backs) - there is a 2 hour restriction.

  • If arriving from the south, come up the M11 to Junction 12 and follow the signs to the city centre (and the Lion Yard car park).
  • If arriving from the north or west, leave the A14 at the junction with the A1307 and follow the signs to the city centre (and the Lion Yard car park) via Queen's Road (the inner ring road).
  • If arriving from the east, leave the A14 at the junction with the A130 and follow the signs to the city centre (and the Lion Yard car park) via Chesterton Road and Queen's Road (the inner ring road).

Arriving by taxi or chauffeur-driven car

Drivers should be asked to get as near to the Senate-House as possible, via King's Parade. It should be noted that waiting is forbidden.

Making deliveries to the Old Schools

  • All deliveries should be announced at the Old Schools reception unless other arrangements have been made in advance. For deliveries involving installation to point of use, drivers must sign in and be issued with a visitor's badge at reception.

  • There are parking and access restrictions in place around the Old Schools building between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Deliveries must therefore be made outside of these hours unless otherwise instructed.

  • Access via the courtyard on Trinity Lane is available before 10am and after 4pm. The main reception area is located here and there are spiral staircases and a small lift to the upper floors. It is worth noting that the capacity of the lift is very small and it cannot carry large items. Whilst the roads are closed, the reception may be reached on foot via Senate House passage.

  • Where deliveries are necessary between the hours of 10am and 4pm prior arrangements must be made with the University contact. The University does have a parking permit for a loading bay on King's Parade opposite the Senate House lawn entrance. This option allows for the delivery of goods to the front of the building, and for larger items for delivery to the upper floors, which can be carried up the wider staircases at the front of the Old Schools. Drivers of delivery vehicles will need to obtain the permit on arrival and display it in their vehicle. The permit is issued by the City Council and is only valid for use in the specified bay and whilst goods are being unloaded. Delivery vehicles will then have to be moved and parked elsewhere if drivers are to be involved in installation. Pay and Display parking is available on Queen's Road behind the Old Schools building along the University Backs. The Old Schools can then be accessed on foot via Garret Hostel Lane, which leads onto Trinity Lane.
