Actions Live: Issam Kourbaj

Sat 17 March 2018

Kettle's Yard House and Gallery

To mark the 7th year of the Syrian Conflict artist Issam Kourbaj makes a live work as a response to the air strikes and barrel bombs that killed (and are still killing thousands) of innocent Syrian civilians.

Strike touches on the idea of building a nest by collecting sticks. However, there is a dark side to this—the nest is being burnt. Kourbaj will burn 2559 matchsticks, one for each day since the Syrian Uprising on 15 March 2011.

Since the beginning of the conflict in Syria, Issam Kourbaj has made work that articulates the unimaginable destruction and loss inflicted on ordinary people and which reflects upon his cultural heritage. For Actions. The image of the world can be different, Issam Kourbaj has developed his ongoing idea, creating a work every day that is ‘lost’ to the conflict in his homeland.
