The Betty Behrens Seminar on Classics of Historiography

Paul Seaward on "The History of the Rebellion" by Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon

Annual Genizah Lecture 2019

Wed 30 October 2019

Cambridge University Library

Our speaker, Marina Rustow, is Khedouri A. Zilkha Professor of Jewish Civilization in the Near East at Princeton University.

The Cairo Genizah is a veritable time capsule of an age when the vast majority of Jews lived in under the rule of caliphs and sultans. The manuscripts hold the promise of illuminating not just an unusually cosmopolitan medieval Jewish world, but the lives of Christians and Muslims as well — from flax-growers, sugar-sellers, poets and Indian Ocean traders to caliphs, viziers and courtiers. The advent of digital technologies and a critical mass of specialists has now brought us to the brink of a paradigm shift, paradoxically by nurturing intensified attention to the materiality of the texts.
