Diana Zwibach writes:
After many years I revisited Lancaster Castle at the beginning of 2011, where I was once more taken by its fascinating history and the imminent 400th anniversary of the Lancashire witches trials at the castle.
In 2011 I became a fellow at UCLAN ArtLab in Preston, where I went back to printmaking. Up to that time I had been working on paintings, works on paper, collage, assemblage, sculpture and mixed media. I found myself engaging more and more with drawing, enjoying the richness of form, line and markings using the graphite, pencils, inks and charcoal as tools celebrating the line. Printmaking was the medium to adopt when I decided to produce a body of work on the subject of the Lancashire Witches trial, myths and stories that captivated my imagination. I have during this period visited various sites in Lancashire where to this day there are remnants linked to the witches activities , dwellings, houses, churchyards, and areas where their paths were noted.
My work generally deals with the human condition within its socio, political and geographical perspective so this subject and mainly the psyche of the accused and accusers were of great interest to me. I also looked at the present day existence and activities of witches' covens in Lancashire.
Despite the passage of years and the enlightenment the general public attitudes are still coloured by appearances and first impressions which are once again proved inaccurate. There remains still the desire to mock and deride those who do not conform and who dare to be different. With this in mind I have produced a body of work incorporating imagery in various media.
For this exhibition I'll be showing Large paintings on paper in mixed media, monotypes, silkscreen and lithography prints.
