The Michaelhouse Centre

The story of one local family – the Leach family. They lived in Cambridge for several generations and were workers, not thinkers; artists, not academics. During the 18th century they worked as head cooks at Trinity College. During the early 19th century Richard Hopkins Leach became Cambridge’s most prolific inn sign painter. Then his son Frederick started F. R. Leach & Sons in the 1860's, a company of artist decorators who worked with the best-known architects and designers of the age including William Morris, Charles Kempe and George Bodley. Work that the Leach firm did can be found in many decorated interiors of buildings all around Cambridge including Michealhouse.
