Vibration and Acoustics of Everyday Things
Mon 9 March 2020
Department of Chemistry
A Lecture by Dr Anurag Agarwal , of the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge.
The final talk in a series of lectures organised by the Cambridge Philosophical Society in the Lent Term 2020.
Abstract: In this lecture, we will explore the physics of sound generation by dripping taps, whistling kettles, ultrasonic mice mating calls, wheezing lungs and buzzing reeds in musical instruments through a series of experimental investigations. We will see that even though the mechanism of sound generation in these everyday things are counter-intuitive, they can be explained by simple physical models.
