The edge of beyond: the Antarctic paintings of Dafila Scott

Tue 15 May 2012 - Sat 30 June 2012

The Polar Museum

Dafila Scott was artist in residence sponsored by the Friends of the Scott Polar Research Institute on the Royal Navy’s Ice Patrol Vessel, HMS Scott in the Antarctic in February 2011. This exhibition shows some of the work arising from this trip. On the centenary of her Grandfather, Captain Scott’s last expedition, she spent a month with HMS Scott travelling down the Antarctic Peninsula. Antarctica is still the last great wilderness and, since 1961, when the Antarctic Treaty came into being, it has provided a good example of peaceful co-existence and collaboration among nations in the interests of science. The Scott Polar Research Institute has played an important part in the scientific work undertaken in Antarctica and there is much more to be done. With this in mind, Dafila aim is to produce work which will help to convey the excitement and fascination of the Antarctic.
