Indigenous film, art and activism: counter-cartographies of the Amazon

This one-day symposium explores the relationship between film, art, and activism in the Amazon. Along with in-person discussions by international speakers, the programme includes a number of contemporary Amazonian films made by Indigenous creators who are using film to amplify their voices and contest historical marginalisation.

Social Movements, Protest & Dissent in India - A film series at the Centre of South Asian Studies

WEEK 5 - ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISM & INDIA'S ADIVASIS

A Narmada Diary (Anand Patwardhan, 1995; 57mins)
• A film about the Sardar Sarover Dam and the Narmada Bachao Andolan (Save Narmada Movement).

The Fire Within (Buru Sengal) (Shriprakash Prakash, 2002; 57mins)
• A film about the socio-political, ecological impact of the 150 year-old coal industry in Jharkhand.


The screenings are open to all and are held in the meeting room of the Centre of Latin American Studies (directly beneath the Centre of South Asian Studies, in the Alison Richard Building, West Road). All screenings begin at 6pm on Thursday. Wine and soft drinks are served during the screenings.
