Cambridge Physics Centre presents: Exotic Magnetism: monopoles and emergent order by Dr Sian Dutton
Thu 15 November 2018
Cavendish Laboratory
Magnetic materials underpin many technologies from the compass, to magnetic storage of data in RAM memory devices. By controlling the individual building block of magnetism, the 'spin' of individual atoms, it is possible to manipulate the magnetic properties to induce exotic forms of magnetic order. Siân will discuss the exotic magnetism which arises in new materials prepared in laboratories, and how they might be used as bits in next generation computing or for the magnetic equivalent of electricity called ‘magnetricity'.
