The age of the collector: the founding and development of the Woodwardian and Sedgwick Museums
Thu 3 April 2014
Anglia Ruskin University
The founding collection of fossils, minerals and rocks of the Sedgwick Museum was made by Dr John Woodward in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. In this talk Dr Ken McNamara, the Director of the Museum, will examine how Woodward obtained his 9,400 specimens and discuss the role that Adam Sedgwick and other 19th century geologists and collectors, such as Mary Anning, played in expanding the collection to its present size of at least 1.5 million specimens.
