Divided Kingdom: social class and inequality in modern Britain
Mon 24 February 2014 - Mon 24 March 2014
Institute of Continuing Education
All complex societies are characterised by the unequal distribution of resources. In this weekly course at Madingley Hall, we take a fresh look at the extent to which Britain is united or divided in the early 21st century by exploring social class, ethnic and gender inequalities.
We will consider definitions of social class, its impact on life chances and evaluate theories of inequality to explore the issue of social justice.
24 February: Chavs, Rahs and Toffs? Defining and measuring social class and social mobility in modern Britain (Dr Nigel Kettley)
3 March: Aiming for equality: what, why and how? (Dr Emily Caddick Bourne)
10 March: Life chances: Inequalities by social class in modern Britain (Dr Nigel Kettley)
17 March: Consensus or class war? Theories of social class and historical change (Dr Nigel Kettley)
