ECHR President Dean Spielmann: 'Opinion 2/13 and other matters'

Sat 14 March 2015

Trinity College

On Saturday 14 March, Trinity College will host a lecture by the President of the European Court of Human Rights (Strasbourg) Dean Spielmann entitled 'Opinion 2/13 and other matters'.

In Opinion 2/13, decided just before Christmas, the Court of Justice (Luxembourg) controversially and unexpectedly ruled that the EU could not accede to the European Convention on Human Rights under the terms of the agreement carefully negotiated over a number of years.

President Spielmann, an alumnus of Fitzwilliam College, has recently come out with some strong words of criticism: Dogfight continues: Strasbourg not happy with EU Court on accession to ECHR | UK Human Rights Blog: http://ukhumanrightsblog.com/2015/01/30/dogfight-continues-strasbourg-not-happy-with-eu-court-on-accession-to-echr/#more-25236

He has kindly agreed to talk about his views on the Opinion and other matters (which may touch on the UK's views of the European Convention), not under Chatham House Rules.
