Indigenous film, art and activism: counter-cartographies of the Amazon

This one-day symposium explores the relationship between film, art, and activism in the Amazon. Along with in-person discussions by international speakers, the programme includes a number of contemporary Amazonian films made by Indigenous creators who are using film to amplify their voices and contest historical marginalisation.

MAZE by Stuart Pearson Wright featuring Keira Knightley

Fri 2 November 2018 - Sun 4 November 2018

The Heong Gallery

To celebrate the opening of the exhibition HALFBOY by Stuart Pearson Wright, we will be screening his 2-channel video installation Maze on the first three days of the opening. Constance (Keira Knightley) and Edmund (Stuart Pearson Wright) stumble through an Elizabethan maze, having lost each other along the way. Minds and decorum unravel as twilight closes in and they are no closer to reuniting.

Keira Knightley on Maze
“Ideas (for Maze) were developed at his studio over cupcakes and tea and under the skeleton of his dog, and a film piece was decided on: a collision of our worlds”

Stuart Pearson Wright on Maze
“Characters from Elizabethan period dramas are expected to perform in a particular way. The male has got to be heroic – if he’s wearing a cod piece, he’s got to get his sword out, win the maiden, and save the day…So, I wanted to take all of those references and expectations and piss them up the wall: explode the myth of the hero.”
