1989-2014 and counting: Lynne Strover Gallery celebrates 25 years

Fri 18 April 2014 - Mon 5 May 2014

Lynne Strover Gallery

Now regarded by many as the best commercial art gallery associated with Cambridge, Lynne Strover Gallery is housed in a mid-nineteenth century school, built in plain classical style in the familiar pale, chalky ‘Cambridge whites’ bricks of the district. The gallery is both home and workplace for owner Lynne Strover, who has deftly created an exhibition space that is at once spacious and airy and yet homely and familiar. The gallery is very much in the spirit of Jim Ede’s Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge, which, bequeathed to the local community, remains to this day true to his vision of showing modern art in an attractive and comfortable domestic setting.

Lynne grew up in Lancashire and trained as a nurse at Addenbroke’s Hospital. Her background is not what you might expect for a now highly regarded art dealer, well known and respected for her “eye” and ability to spot new talent by her wide circle of collectors and clients. “There was no art in the house I grew up in, there was no bathroom either. I failed my art exams so when the gallery opened its doors 25 years ago it must have been destiny. I can think of no other reason,” she says.

The anniversary exhibition is the highlight of a packed calendar of 25th anniversary events and exhibitions. It will give collectors and visitors old and new the chance to acquire and view some of gallery owner Lynne Strover’s hand-picked favourites. Featured artists will include Sir Terry Frost, Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson and there will be ceramics by William Marshall and Robin Welch.
