Jacqui Dankworth 'in conversation' with Mary Buckley

Fri 6 March 2015

Hughes Hall

Vocalist Jacqui Dankworth will be ‘In Conversa-tion’ with Mary Buckley at Hughes Hall on Friday 6 March at 6pm in the Pavilion Room answering questions about jazz, music, writing lyrics, per-forming and what matters to her. Afterwards she will take questions from the audience.

Jacqui began her career in acting, performing with the Royal Shakespeare Com-pany, at the National Theatre and in the West End and has also appeared in film and on television. Although now lauded as one of the UK’s top jazz singers, her music spans genres with influences from folk, soul, blues and classical. John Fordham in the Guardian suggests that ‘she exhibits a subtle control of dynamics and a voluptuous tonal richness that seems to make almost any material sound special.’ Jacqui performs regularly in the UK and abroad, accompanied in 2014 in London by the Brodsky Quartet at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and at King’s Place. Reviews described their collaboration as ‘a treat’ and ‘an exotic mix.’ Her final song ‘Sitting on Top of the World’ brought down the house. Jacqui’s singing in the London Jazz Festival was praised as ‘mesmeric,’ and as ‘affecting and technically flawless.’
Jacqui Dankworth’s CDs to date are As The Sun Shines Down on Me (2003), De-tour Ahead (2004), Back to You (2009), It Happens Quietly (2011) Live to Love (2013). Her next CD will be released in 2015.
As well as performing in concerts, Jacqui is involved in education and with the Brodsky Quartet has regularly over fifteen years participated in Education Project CoMA (Contemporary Music for All), working with teenagers.
