Roy Calne & The Ratchet of Science

Thu 23 October 2014

Heffers Bookshop

Science, like the universe, is expanding and accelerating. This book outlines the many gifts that science has bestowed upon our quality of life ranging from health, travel, and communication, but it also raises concerns about the sometimes awful consequences of science. These may be accidental and unanticipated, or deliberate, as with the development of new weapons that carry dreadful potential. After the Second World War, a chasm separated the regimes of the East and West, and the possibility that the world was heading towards a catastrophic atomic conflict was a serious worry.

Sir Roy Calne is a pioneer in the field of transplant surgery, having performed the first liver transplant operation in Europe (1968) and the world’s first liver, heart and lung transplant (1987). He was Harkness Fellow at Harvard Medical School from 1960-61 and Professor of Surgery at Cambridge University from 1965 to 1998. His research has focussed on prevention of organ graft rejection, developing new drugs that have prolonged the lives of thousands of liver transplant recipients. In 1974 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and was knighted in 1986. Sir Roy was awarded, together with Dr Thomas Starzl, the prestigious 2012 Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award. He is Emeritus Professor of Surgery, University of Cambridge, JK & Visiting Professor National University of Singapore.
