Robert, bestselling author of The Old Ways, has written the foreword to the book, as well as having recently dedicated a BBC Radio 4 programme to Nan, who is now being re-discovered as one of the great nature writers of the last century. Her intensely lyrical book about the Cairngorms, The Living Mountain (1977), has recently become extremely popular.
Ali Smith, the award-winning novelist and short-story writer, has long been an admirer of Shepherd's work. Like Shepherd, Ali was born and brought up in the north-east of Scotland.
