The age of the collector: History of the Woodwardian and Sedgwick Museums

Wed 11 June 2014

Fitzwilliam Museum

The founding collection of fossils, minerals and rocks of the Sedgwick Museum was made by Dr John Woodward in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Join Ken McNamara, Director of the Sedgwick (and Woodwardian) Museums, as he examines how Woodward obtained his 9,400 specimens and discusses the role that Adam Sedgwick and other 19th century geologists and collectors, such as Mary Anning, played in expanding the collection to its present size of at least 1.5 million specimens.

This event forms part of Universities Week (9-15 June 2014).
