Susan Tuckett: belongings

Sun 17 March 2013 - Sat 13 April 2013

Murray Edwards College

‘Belongings’ is an exhibition of recent work by Sue Tuckett which began as a response to conversations with her father as he began to suffer from dementia. This manifested itself with the loss of his short term memory yet intensity of detail from his early life. The conversations began to reveal that everything was not in its right place, memories had become detached from their original context and some were no longer useful or relevant despite having once been important. The resulting work became a record of possessions and objects displaced from their original use and left in limbo. An archaeology of mundane objects detached from their previous use have become metaphors for loss and dislocation.

Sue Tuckett was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and studied at York School of Art, Loughborough College of Art and Birmingham Polytechnic (now Birmingham City University) An early career in textile design was followed by working in art education. Following posts in Further Education in Birmingham and then at the University of Gloucester and the University of Plymouth she worked at Norwich School of Art and Design (now Norwich University College of the Arts) first as Assistant Principal from 1996-2000 and then as Principal from 2000 to 2008.

During her career in art education she had five one person shows and exhibited in selected group textile art exhibitions in the UK and Europe. Since her retirement in 2008 she has exhibited in selected group exhibitions in Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Romania and the Netherlands.

In 2008 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of the Arts London.
