The life of a London lay figure: Charles Roberson, a case study
Wed 12 November 2014
Fitzwilliam Museum
With Sally Woodcock, Paintings Conservator and PhD candidate working on Roberson Archive.
The papers and objects in the Roberson Archive trace the rise and decline of the London lay figure in exceptional detail. They reveal how lay figures were supplied and distributed throughout London and record their use and abuse at the hands of the artists of the capital. The archive also graphically illustrates the eventual decline and disappearance of this once essential piece of studio equipment in the dilapidated collection of figures it contains: one dirty headless adult with a dislocated knee and four scruffy children with only two heads between them.
