The longest afternoon: how 400 Germans turned the tide at Waterloo
Sat 16 May 2015
Cambridge University Library
Brendan Simms is Professor of the History of International Relations at the University of Cambridge. Today he tells the story of how the Second Light Battalion of the King's German Legion held off Napoleon at Waterloo long enough to give the Prussians time to come up. He begins with an account of the origins of this Anglo-German hybrid, moves on to a description of the dramatic events of 18 June 1815, and concludes with a discussion of their legacy today.
